From Nigeria to Neoprene: The Journey of Larissa Muehleder
Having spent my earliest years being raised in Nigeria, my cultural heritage always imbued me with a love for boldness and vibrancy. These traits would later manifest in the creations of my eponymous brand, Muehleder. But the journey to becoming a renowned designer wasn't a straight path—it was a weaving narrative of immigration, self-discovery, and a relentless pursuit of my dreams.
Arriving in Brooklyn with my mother in the late 90s was a leap into the unknown. Yet, amidst my imposter syndrome of not feeling like I belonged, I discovered the power of first impressions and the language of style. Each encounter became a lesson in self-expression, laying the foundation for what would become my life's work.
From humble beginnings sewing custom prom dresses in high school to crafting full collections in college, my passion for design blossomed. Muehleder wasn't just about fabric and thread—it was about empowering women to embrace their differences with every curve and smile. Each piece I created was an invitation to stand tall, to own your space, and to celebrate the unique beauty within.
Neoprene, an unexpected yet transformative fabric, became the cornerstone of the Muehleder brand. Traditionally reserved for scuba suits, I saw its potential to redefine elegance and athleticism in fashion. With neoprene, I sculpted voluminous cocktail dresses and elevated athleisure wear to new heights, infusing each design with a sense of daring and innovation.
